The Ermine Street Guard return to Fishbourne with spectacular displays of marching, siege weaponry and military skills. Since their formation in 1972, the The Ermine Street Guard have become the leading society studying the Roman Army and its equipment.

Get an army “tattoo”, try your hand at spear practice and see if you can earn your keep as a new recruit during Roman Army Week at Fishbourne Roman Palace this Half Term. Sign up with the recruitment officer and learn to write your name in Latin before completing a range of tasks to “earn” a day’s pay. Other activities include archery, sword practice and dressing-up Roman-style. Once you have completed the activities, return to the recruitment officer, to receive a certificate and a (replica) Roman coin as your first day’s pay!

Latin for Beginners

Spend a day learning Latin in a relaxed and friendly environment. Meet the classical authors and dip into their writing, discover the basis of many English words and hear the sound of classical Latin read aloud.
This enjoyable and informative one-day course for adults will be led by George Sharpley from The Latin Qvarter. The course is ideal for those interested in gaining a glimpse of the past through language. The mixture of historical references, vocabulary and grammar makes this an inspiring course for all, from complete beginners to those who would like to brush up on their knowledge.
The course costs £50 for the day which includes tea and coffee on arrival, entry to the Roman Palace and all materials. Places are limited so please book in advance by telephoning 01243 785859 or palacebookings@sussexpast.co.uk
